Interesting language. Not sure if it's completely authentic but well sustained and evocative of the age. Nice twist and overall an enjoyable read

Jake Kendall is obviously a highly original writer of short stories, and this must be a good example. The language is deliberately intended to give historical context and a narrative to match. The story is well-researched in its terminology, in its vocabulary for everyday status and practices (for example, 'manservant', 'purified by scourging'), and in its references to the world as perceived by the central characters. Sentence structure is deliberately historical, deliberately at times vaguely obscure. This is obviously the effect which Jake wanted to achieve, and he has succeeded at this. It's clever, witty, well paced, and well executed. There's a subtlety which runs throughout the story, and gentle humour but with a bite in places. I'd highly recommend this story by this clever, innovative, sharp-humoured author.
