Simon Reagan
A short piece with a simple theme about a VAT visit to a milk round
owner. It’s a gentle read with a relaxed context. A light read without a
definitive ending. But here’s the point which arises from this story. The author
has the possibility to write a great series of short stories, all around the idea of
the challenges and situations faced by VAT and general tax inspectors. There’s a huge
opening here, and the stories which can be written are endless. A few ideas. The inspector
who stumbles across a money laundering mafia enterprise. Tax avoidance in the writing of a will
which exposes family tensions, possibly a murder. The tax inspector offered a bribe by a
millionaire businessman or an entertainer. You could convert the tax inspector into a forensic
role. Just a few suggestions but you get my drift. This may be a rich seam which this author
has opened up, with the opportunity for a series which is inexhaustible.
